Rem 7400 Weathermaster: POI

I tested using Ramshot Big Game with 165gr Sierra Game King or MK. Both were shot less than an inch. I also tested with 175gr Sierra MK. It was accurate. My 7400 will now shoot anything, regardless of the powders (IMR4046, IMR4350 or Big Game). Ramshot is much cheaper than IMR, so I will stay with that for now. Just take your time to shoot, no rapid firing. These guns are not meant for rapid firing. I waited for the barrel to cool down before firing the next. Good luck!

I finished work early today so I had a chance to head out to the range and test the rifle.
I couldn't find my inch/ lb torque wrench so I tightened the forend screw tight with a screw driver and marked the position on the metal cap.
first 3 ( cold barrel ) - 1 1/8" group, 2 touching with a third 1" away
second 3 ( warm barrel ) - 3" group horizontally
third 3 ( cool barrel ) - 1 1/8" group
fourth 3 ( warm barrel ) - 3" group

no waiting in between shots when shooting the group

The screw didnt move from where I set it.
If I continue to get 1 - 1 1/2" inch or so groups with this gun cold and the zero never changes I will use it on my next hunt. I am going to do a lot more testing before I go.

BTW, the first two shot groups were Federal Premium with 165gr partitions
The second two groups were handloads with 57 grs of IMR4350 and 165gr Accubonds.
I am happy to use either one of those.

Thanks again for the help.

Great news! You may want to clean the barrel. Someone suggested to me using Bore Tech copper remover for the barrel. It took me a couple of days to remove most of the copper from the barrel. The first few patches were completely blue. You might want to give it a shot.

3" group with warm barrel suggested that something is touching the barrel. I used a business card between the barrel and the forearm stock. I slipped a card around the barrel above the end cap, as I tightened the screw. After tightened the screw, I removed the card. Make sure nothing is touching the barrel.

Try to load the bullet close to the lands. Remington seems to have a longer OAL.

Better yet, Sweets 7.62 for copper removal.

Interesting.... I do have some copper remover ( I think its Hoppes ) . I should give her a good cleaning. I will investigate the clearances on the forend. I checked it a couple of years ago and it seemed clear all of the way up to the gas block. I dont remember if I ever bothered to check in front of the block though.
I shot more yesterday and POI was consistent although I had a 8-10 mph cross wind so my groups were a little bigger. I noticed my cap screw was no longer as tight as it was before shooting. I was able to take up almost an 1/8th of a turn on the screw. The screw never backed off from the mark, it now tightens past the mark a bit. Probably the heat seating the washer I guess.

The handloads that I am shooting are 3.320 COAL, that just clears the magazine. In fact I had one out of 25 or so have a cycling issue. The tip of the ACB got beat up pretty bad. That NEVER happens on this gun unless the chamber is really filthy.
I don't know how far off the lands they are but they are not touching. I don't like seating the bullet past the published data, especially on a load that is 100% of the case capacity.

I do have the headspace gauges and that is within spec.
Thanks, jeff
