Hello all, I recently acquired a Rem 700. The bolt release appears to get stuck when pressed for removal of the bolt. The release button resets just fine with a little assistance but it should do it on its own.

I took the rifle apart, cleaned and light lubed. It helped but the problem still persist. Has anyone else had this same issued and if you did, how did you fix it. Thank you in advance.

The bolt release lever on the side of the trigger needs to be tweaked. There is a little tab on the top of the lever that fits into the notch in the bolt release that’s inside the action. Slightly bend the little tab so it’s fully engaged in the notch while in the resting position. Also check the slot the bolt release rides in. Sometimes the edges need to be smoothed so it doesn’t bind.

See picture for what to bend.

Could be rubbing the stock as well. Does it function fine when out of the stock?

I will try this tomorrow, looks like this may be issue. Thank you all for the responses.

I was going to mention friction on stock or tang catching as stated above. I had to modify my stock when I replaced the original.

I'm no expert and I've had the same issue with mine. I used a small thin file and worked out the slot it sits in. Also took the flat piece and worked it on a small piece of fine grit sandpaper then polished it up before putting it back in. It works but I've found I still take it apart once per year and clean it up. I've thought about a small drop of kroil every once in a while but worried that might hold in dirt more. Good luck.
