Be Prepared!! Our dogs are like family to most of us and they deserve to being cared for. Over the years I have had many dog injuries afield. Fortunately none have been fatal but....javalina and coyote fights, snares, falling over a cliff, porcupine barbs, loss of eye to cactus spine, Oakley wound Dec 2018.jpgbarb wire and impaled on limbs are memorable. No snakebites yet but close. Some suggested preparations:
1) Get phone numbers and hours of operation for veterinarians closest to where you will be hunting
2) Build a first aid kit to keep in vehicle.....staples, blood clot, antihistamine, gauzes, tape, eye wash, otoscope, sissors, hemostat, etc
3) Have a way to carry dog out....I bought a special dog carry vest for mine
4) Carry hemostat, comb, tweezers, vet tape, cable cutter (snares), and large zip ties (for conibears)
5) Get dog snake avoidance training if appropriate....perhaps also porcupine, skunk or other critter avoidance
6) Build a skunk deodorizer kit.....dawn soap, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
