NM Unit 27 shameless information request

I drew a Dec. rifle whitetail tag for Unit 27. Looking at the unit on OnX the road situation looks rough, tons of public but a lot of the roads say "private road" leading in. Hoping someone on here has some info and would be willing to have a conversation either via phone or PM. I likely won't get a chance to scout much (maybe a day before season starts). I have hunted coues just across the border in 35a in AZ and the terrain looks similar so I feel comfortable that I understand how to approach the "hunt" portion of the hunt. Clearly if you have any honey holes send those OnX pins my way, but some access info would really help a brother out. Thanks!

Call the local GW, and county police department. They will be able to help with what roads you can use.

Anytime you’re in NM you should use CarryMap. The roads and ownership information is better than OnX(and it’s free). OnX is easier to view and use offline, so it’s worth having, but consulting CarryMap will help.

^^^^^^

Bump because I added new information to the post after you liked it, and I didn’t want you to miss it.

My Dad is going with me in Dec. I’m pretty excited. Will keep this thread updated as we get closer.

About a month out. Had some luck getting a tag holder list from Huntinfool and got some general info on the unit. Looking forward to glassing up a nice Coues buck. I’m back to solo on this one as Dad backed out.

Spent the past two days glassing my brains out. Looking high and low and everywhere in between. I have seen 1 doe and her fawn twice. The first was a legit spot and the second time the fawn was running in circles and had a bad case of the zoomies :).
Not sure I fully understand Coues deer hunting yet LOL. Found a great place to be tomorrow evening (I have to work tomorrow morning). Staying north of Rodeo and it is a darn long drive to where I’m hunting.
I live in a very rural part of KY but this is RURAL no grocery stores or gas stations even for miles. Not a bad thing, just interesting.

"no grocery stores or gas stations even for miles"

Sorry, but this is funny.
I’m not even talking about where I’m hunting. I’m used to that. Just saying short of the Lochsa in ID I can’t remember a place that I’ve been that is this far away from stuff. I guess I’m just thinking about the folks that live around. 80 miles to a gallon of milk. I just don’t think that exists that many places anymore. In KY there is a Dollar General every 10 miles. You’d better make a solid grocery list and check it twice before you leave. LOL

Hope you stocked up on Ale-8 before you left the Commonwealth!

I had to work today but got out this afternoon and almost immediately got onto deer. Ended up seeing 6 does in 3 groups. Cant overstate how much it helps to just see a deer a convince yourself you aren’t an idiot spending hours looking at an empty mountainside.

Had an opportunity on a dandy little 3x3 at last light on Tuesday. A comedy of errors on my part ended with me shooting over his back. Went back yesterday saw more does but thr little buck didn’t make another appearance. I have to work today but will be out there by 3 ready to glass another one up. So far I have noticed mainly that I miss my rangefinding binos. I have only ever used a set of vortex fury 10x rangefinding binos and decided to bring some 16x binos for this hunt. Trying to get an accurate range on anything after having to re-locate it with 4x just sucks. I think next time I’m back to my 10x on the tripod with a spotter for confirmation. My REI fold up chair is a game changer for all day glassing sessions vs the ground, worth the little bit of weight in the pack. Starlink mini with a car adapter is amazing, put it in the sunroof or on the dash and enjoy ability to call from anywhere at anytime (even highway speeds).
As for deer, I haven’t learned anything much yet LOL but I’d say I’ll get one on the ground this evening…will see.
