New Pup

Pup looks to be coming along nicely. It’s gotta be the most frustrating/rewarding experiences around.

Banks is doing great. He's a great retriever, brings birds to the hand. His pointing is coming along, still some work to do if you're into style, but he has zero issues finding birds and holding.

He has no concerns with gun fire, he's way more interested in the birds than the shots. As of this past weekend, he holds the point past the flush and through the shots. Working on making him stay put until given the command to retrieve. This weekend was a first, ended up trying to mimic a covey flushing at different times with shots coming with the different flushes (Thank you bird launchers). He did great! Held through it all, pretty dang happy with his steadiness through the shots. His whoa training has been phenomenal.

He's still very young (9 months) but he's really doing well. Due a number of reasons, mainly the water being cold up here, I haven't started him on water retrieves. I need to get on that now that the weather is getting better.

He's getting used to the whistle commands combined with voice, next few weeks is when the e-collar is going to be introduced.

I'll be looking to schedule his NAVHDA Natural Ability test in late October or early November. Still a long way to go, but I'm pretty excited about this dog.

Being patient and working on his "heel" command.

Welcome to the griff club!
They're great dogs.
I'll second what Golfer said above about a good comb/brush. You'll probably end up with 2 or 3 different ones until you find the one that is right for the specific coat. They can greatly vary between dogs.
Again, Golfer nailed it with the e-collar. Absolutely no need to try and use that for many months. Same with gun fire. Don't rush it. Make sure when either collar or gun fire are introduced it is in a comfortable and fun environment for the dog.
Also, make sure to keep an eye on the dogs ears. My griff usually gets 1 or 2 ear infections a year. We now keep antibiotic cream on hand and apply it as soon as we see red irritation in the ear or notice the dog scratching a bunch. You'll know it when you see it. They've got a lot of furs in their ears that can trap moisture.
Grab some drying powder, and some ear cleanser as well to keep the moisture at bay.

What kinda cream have you been using when you see the red irritation?
