Like a New Penny

Forget about trillion dollar bailouts, the biggest news from the U.S. Mint is also the smallest unit of U.S. money. For the first time in over 50 years, a redesigned Lincoln penny will go into circulation next February.
Unveiled on Monday by the Mint, the new Once-Cent coin will commemorate Lincoln's 200th birthday and feature four different scenes on the reverse (tails side) each depicting a different phase in Lincoln's life. The obverse (heads side) of the coin will continue to bear the familiar Lincoln profile.

Scenes on the reverse of the 2009 Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial One-Cent coin honor Lincoln's birth and childhood in Kentucky, his years growing up in Indiana, his professional life in Illinois, and his years as president in Washington, D.C.

The first of the newly designed one-cent coins will go into circulation on February 12, 2009, the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The remaining redesigned pennies will be released at intervals throughout 2009.
