Hey all, I posted this on the deer forum as well but found out I will be without a wife and kids the week of thanksgiving. My wife said there is no way I am going anywhere next year, so I see this as a great opportunity to get out on a hunting trip. Anyone know of any decent over the counter elk(cow or bull) opportunities thanksgiving week? Thinking of grabbing the dog and heading west. My boss will be mad, but I can't think of anything better to do. I'm in northern Michigan but willing to drive a ways.

I think most all of our OTC elk tags end by mid Nov.

Our OTC white tail tag is pretty good. But that may not interest you as you can hunt those at home. Private land is a non issue, Gobs of public. You can buy the tag at the gas station.

CO may have something for you.

There's still some reduced price cow/calf tags in Wyo, but realistically I'd only go for the ones that has plenty of public access and units that doesn't have a lot of wilderness areas if you were to make the drive. You could pick up a leftover, then apply to one of those weekly or daily draws for hunting the elk refuge if you haven't laid eyes on elk in your unit as a second option. Colorado is something to think about as well.

Was researching wy and eyeballing 111-7. Any thoughts there? Going to call F and G Monday.

I will also take a look at the WT tags in Idaho. Sitting in a tree in Michigan waiting for a 1 1/2 year old buck just doesn't light my fire like the western chase!

There's elk there, just get off the road. With the type 7 tag, keep in mind that you can't hunt the HMA. I know a few guys who bought this leftover on a whim and did have some success but they had time to scout the area. But if you're looking into whitetail, you can't beat Missouri and the tags are OTC and there's public hunting along with some exceptional fishing.

Makes sense. True mountain bucks and you would be scouting for future elk. Rut hunt, good numbers in northern Idaho right now. Over objective in some units I think.
