1,000 scientists urge halt to deep-sea bottom trawling

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20040216/ts_afp/un_environment_sea_040216111449

""Shallow-water coral reefs are sometimes called 'the rainforests of the sea' for their extraordinary biological diversity, perhaps the highest anywhere on Earth," the 1,136 scientists from 69 countries said.

"However, until quite recently, few people knew that the majority of coral species live in colder, darker depths, or that some of these form coral reefs and forests similar to those of shallow waters in appearance, species richness and importance to fisheries."

Some corals resemble "trees" up to 10 meters tall while others form dense thickets supporting hundreds or thousands of species..........."

Let's hear from all the loggers out there about how the coral reefs and coral forests are a "renewable resource". :D :D

"Some corals resemble "trees" up to 10 meters tall....."

I think the key word is RESEMBLE, not are LIKE.....

What's the matter IT? You must have run out of intelligent things to say along time ago. ;)

JM2C but...bottom trawling should be halted or severely limited for reasons other than coral reef protection. By-catch being the first. BTW if anyone is interested, Alaska Magazine just did an article about our cold water reefs near Dutch Harbor, a major fishing port in the Aleutians.
