Who is the party that pushed the new rifle bull tag in HD 702?

I liistened via zoom on the FWP season setting last Nov for Region 7 and this question was raised and the Region 7 Manager said it was hanful of landowners (outfitters) that wanted a separate imcreased tag quota.

Landowner quota didn’t even get filled in the draw. Once again Montana is catering to the vocal minority of landowners and outfitters when it comes to managing. There was also no support at the meeting for increasing quota on the units wide rifle tag and we still got it.

I’m sure there was some wealthy out of state interests as well when that tag got added.

Agreed I suggested that but there was pushback. I’m sure there is more than I know going on. At the end of the day even the 702 landowners agreed we didn’t need to add permits to the other districts and we still got them. Good way to make our elk hunting the same as our deer hunting. We can’t have nice things.

We basically got 200 plus more bull tags that 16 landowners supposedly wanted for good faith access. What a kick to the nuts. There is a lot more going on behind the scenes that the peasants will ever get to see.

702 landowners also wanted more cow tags for themselves family and friends. They have been given the tools to manage elk they don’t have any interest in it, which i understand but it is not a good look for them.

@DFS - cheer up - im sure some great conservation org is working on kumbaya, access, and compromise for normal people to be able to get on them there

The feedback i heard was they wanted to maintain a certain quality level of experience, age class, and population so they wanted it to remain le.

At the very least - some NRs who want to pay for access got a great unit to put in for.

There isn’t much common sense going on right now but 702 should be cut out of the other districts and set with a high quota to appease the landowners that think they can control an elk population by shooting bulls.

I agree with most of this but they know they can’t control population by shooting bulls. They can just control their pocket book…

I was being a smart ass. It’s not hard to see what the real motivation is.
