Has anyone drew a Minnesota Elk license?

I just applied for the Minnesota Elk Hunt this year in NW Minnesota. While I know my odds to draw are slim, I was wondering if anyone here had drawn that tag previously and what your experience was like.

Never even applied for that. It's such a small herd I don't understand why they still put tags on them.

Moose - yes
Elk - no

The herd won't be growing whether there's a hunting season or not. Rep. Dan Fabian and the ag lobby passed a bill last year requiring permission from the Dept of Ag to increase their numbers. That won't be happening. I think a hunt is a good way to draw attention to this issue.

At least the state is moving forward in identifying areas outside of the NW corner that could be used in restoring elk. that's good news. Going to be really tough to do it with the ag lobby in northern Minnesota though.

How many people typically apply for the elk hunt?

This is my first year applying as well. From the stats I've read it's right around 2,000 people who apply for the permits.
