Filling the freezer

Had a couple of mates over chasing deer the last few days. They had worked hard, seen plenty and were trying to get it done on a decent sambar stag but the crappy weather and unstable breezes that came with it where wrecking havoc whenever they were trying to get into bow range. It can be a very tough challenge harvesting a sambar with the rifle, let alone with archery gear and they had done well to see a few stags, but it just never worked out with the right set up on the stalks they had at stags.

I kept in touch letting them know my freezer was empty and to seriously do something about it but they were holding out for a mature animal. Saturday afternoon i had arranged to meet up with the boys in the bush and as their hunt was winding down they were now pretty keen to take home some venison we knew the first half decent animal we found would be in trouble.

It didn't take too long before we were into deer and our first stalk was blown by shifting wind. A few hundred metres further along a ridge my mate whispered deer and there was a nice sized animal at around 55 metres in a position that was doable for arrow placement. My mate didn't mess around and sent an arrow that flew nicely and penetrated the chest of the sambar. It crashed off and we knew the hit was good. A short while later we went looking for the arrow and located lots of blood and obvious signs of the animal not too good on its feet. Fifty metres further in the bush and we found the spiker and were happy to see a good conditioned animal that would provide plenty of vension for us. It might not have been a big trophy, but it was a great effort and a deserved archery kill. After a few quick photos we gutted the deer and hung him in a tree to cool and continued on seeing a few more deer but the boys weren't able to get blood on any more arrows before nightfall.

It was a good walkout in the dark with packs loaded and before too long we found ourselves up in a mates shed, having a few beers, some dinner and telling tales as the boys got ready to fly home in the morning. It was a short trip with good keen mates and i don't doubt before too long they will back over and into them again.

And oh yeah, next time my mates rooster wakes me up at 5:00am after i only had a couple of hours sleep it might the last sunrise it sees..but i guess he was only getting back at us for keeping him awake most of the night.
