I’m in the process of choosing ammo and getting my new rifle sighted in. This season will my first time rifle hunting out west and up in elevation. I have mounted a new Leopoldo VX3 with the cds dial. (Thanks to scmalts). My question has to do with how much will elevation affect my shooting? When I have the dial made they need the ballistics and also I believe the elevation. We will be hunting at 9,000 to 11,000 ft. It will also be used for whitetail hunting back home at 700 ft.

I'd use a ballistics calculator for the difference in elevation. Take a few test shots when you come out west to verify. Messing around with elevation on my .270 WSM loads at 9,000ft gives about 4 inches less drop at 500 yards compared to 700ft.

Depends, how much is quantified by distance.

Here is a 700 vs 10000 ft elevation comparison for a .284 bullet at 3000 FPS.

111001111002

Irregardless I would range verify any cds dial you have for the elevation, temperature, humidity your hunting at before pulling the trigger on a animal.
