My brother has been doing this for years and for the last couple I have as well. It's a good way to use the bones of a deer, and since my dog hasn't croaked yet, I assume it's safe.

We took two stinkin' ruttin' bucks and processed them - one whitetail, one mule deer

After removing the good stuff, we chopped up the remaining bones - ribs, legs, shoulders, and spine - into smallish pieces. We use machetes, hatchets, knives - we have fun with this part. They go in the keg.

We boil the crap out of them for an hour or two, adding a bottle of barbecue sauce, and some garlic. The bones get really soft.

We remove the bones from the mix. What's left is putrid and nasty, perfect for the compost pile.

We then smoke the bones for a few hours, adding flavor and leaving the bones dry but soft.

Here is a blurry femur and rib.

They go in the freezer and I occasionally spoil my dog with a bone. She goes nuts.

They don't last long.

Silly me, I just throw the bigger bones out in the yard and let the dogs chew on them. It takes them forever to chew elk hooves. My wife usually makes me clean up the yard in the spring.
