The raccoons are thick around us. With the furs being pretty much unsellable, nobody hunts or traps them anymore and population has skyrocketed.
I've trapped about 30-40 this year just to get rid of some around home.

When we were kids in the 70's you could sell a nice coon pelt for $30-40. Everybody was coon hunting and trapping and a road killed one didn't lay on the road for long either.

South Dakota Game and Fish started a bounty on them a couple years ago. $10 a tail for skunk, coon and possum I believe, due to them absolutely decimating game bird nests.

Great stuff!

One of my favorite childhood summers was spent trapping raccoons (1998). There was a incredible crop of raccoons this particular summer and the grain bin for our 4-H steers was one of their favorite stops. I was obsessed with baseball at that point of my life and the HR race between Sosa and McQwire took center stage that summer. I'd check the traps, kill the ones caught, reset the traps, and then make it back into the house in time to watch SportsCenter and stay caught up on the HR race. I was also reading Where the Red Fern Grows over and over that summer - I had my own slice of raccoon woods, minus the Ozarks and the hounds - but still trying to outsmart the ol' coon. Great memories!!

I shot one in the head with my .22 1911 the other day and it came back to life in the “death bucket” that was riding shotgun in the buggy….

I exited stage left upon discovery and the initial attempted attack. When it was all said and done, I had fired 5 shots and had 1 confirmed dead coon and a hole in the buggy door.

Worth it.

Last one i shot was with my 357. Off our deck. He had taken the wifes flip flops up the tree and threw them at us! I said no way Jose. The 357 just happened to be what was on me at the moment. He just fell like a big rock and hit the ground with a thud

Love those older Marlin/Glenfields. I have a handful of them. Pretty nice that they all shoot CCI MiniMags well and all the mags fit all the rifles.
