I have been mule deer and elk hunting every other year for 4 years now. we have saved up our Elk preference point to get unit 66 in colorado this year. I have been going on vacation there for 3 years now in august. This year while I was there i was able to scout at a few location an old guide told me about and a few looked good. Their is four of us that go and we have camped at the trail head and packed in 7 miles with our horses so we are up for any suggestions. my question is have any of you hunting in this unit before and have you had good luck or bad? any stories, ideas, or tips yall have will be great. Thanks

How about you throw up a few tips, stories and ideas in regards to your past experiences hunting mule deer and elk so others can learn? Units, animals numbers etc etc.

Oh yeah, welcome to the forum, look forward to seeing you share some knowledge.

Well we have went on our hunt and all went very good. We only planned on packing into the wilderness area 4-5 miles but after we got in and could see, we ended up packing in 7 miles and setting up camp. we was able to scout the area for one day and somewhat figure out where we might want to hunt before season opened.

Once seasoned opened we all four went our own ways in search for our first Bull Elk. My uncle had a quick view and shot by 8am but no success. the rest of us didn't see anything but Moose. On the second day we went out and went higher and further. I had set down for a mid afternoon rest and snack (maybe a nap). As i set there glassing the hill side i could see i herd a shot from further back and instantly my blood started pumping because the only person that was that was my DAD and i herd the shot and a thud so i knew it was a hit. I was excited that hopefully my dad had got one and maybe the shot would push something around that i could see. Sure enough i was glassing around and spotted a couple cows sky lining on the ridge about a mile away. in a few min there was some where around 30 cows and 5-10 bulls all up there now. i knew that i had to make a move so i started the move that way. an hour and a half later i finally made it up 500ft and 400 yds away without being spotted. I had spotted a good bull that i kept moving towards and he was still there so i gathered my breathing and heart rate and took the shot. the way i was having to brace myself (on a 60 degree slopped hill) was not very good so i could keep my eye on him so i was unsure if i had made a good shot or not. A group ran in my direction but i still couldn't tell if he was running my way or laying dead on the hill. They ran into a low spot where i couldn't see them so i ran over there to see and they seen me and turned around to run away. When they turned around i seen the bull i shot at going down. WHAT A AWESOME DAY!!!!!!. My dad came towards the shot he herd after he finished gutting out his 6X6 bull to see my 6X6 bull. I was just beside myself for my dad and myself killing our first elk ever and that we could do it together.

It took us three days to get them to the Truck (10 miles) with my uncle and cousin help one day. Thanks to them for willing to take one day off from hunting to help us out. After we made the last trip to the truck to get our elks out we got back to camp to find out that my uncle and cousin had both got one. We was able to meet a local outfitter on our trips in and out that was willing to bring his horse trains in and get there elk to the truck since our horses and mules was done. We figured all the horses and mules had traveled over 70 miles.

Again what an Awesome hunting trip this turned into with all four of us killing our first elk ever and being able to spend so much good times with each other!

Thanks

Congrats.

And your hunt report about going 4 for 4 is the BEST response ever to one hunt talkers snarky response to a reasonable help/info request EVER! :hump: No reason to not ask for a little information.

How about some grip and grin pictures.
