This missing hunter thread has me thinking. Me and dad head to Wyoming in 9 days. I’ve hunted the area twice but dad has just camped and assisted me. This year we both have tags. He has Onx but I still worry about him. Has anyone ever used air tags in the back country? I’m thinking of throwing one in his pack. We have no phone service but I can drive 45 minutes or so and get it. When I get service should I be able to get his location from the air tag just incase he doesn’t show up in camp one night? I should probably have already invested in some inreachs but have been waiting to get a new iPhone and see how satellite messages work out. Thanks.

I don’t think air tags work without service. I believe they ping off phones in the vicinity. I could be wrong though. If you have iPhones the satellite texting works pretty good. Just need to connect to the satellite to send and receive. It’s not automatic like texting.

Don’t plant on it. The air tag has to be around an iPhone to work and be able to show up.

My wife did this with our kids, even in a residential neighborhood unless they’re next to someone with an iPhone, it doesn’t work.

I have one on my dog in case he runs off. It only works if you get within like 50 ft of an apple device. Works ok in the suburbs, wouldn’t work well for tracking in remote locations.

Zoleo has live tracking and the others (inreach) may have it also. The tracking party needs to have cell service to see the movements on the zoleo app, the trackee just needs to keep the device on.
Iphone sat texting works OK, a bit cumbersome but useable. It's not however, an emergency solution.

Thanks I’ll look into that. I worry more about my dad as he gets older. Him and technology just doesn’t get along.

Hey @onX Hunt how hard would it be to make a significant other feature so a spouse or someone could log in to your account from a computer and keep tabs on your location if you are on cellular or gps?

Sorry if that’s dumb, I honestly have no clue.

I just upgraded my inreach. I will give you my old one if you think it would help. You would have to get a subscription for it.
Thanks a bunch for the offer but I’m not sure exactly how that would work. If I got him a subscription for it could I see where he is at when I get phone service? If so I’ll buy it off of you.

We use them in our luggage on a regular basis and it works well for that. It would be better than nothing in your situation. Getting within 50 feet would be better than having to see them in thick brush. You can make it beep too but I guess you have to be within 50 feet or so for that also. Someone with an iPhone does have to pass within 50 feet for them to update their location.

if your dad has an iphone 14 or later or other recent phone models from other manufacturers he can satellite text. works fabulously in my recent experience. see if he or you have phones recent enough to be compatible to free (verizon) or cheap $10/month T-mobile satellite texting. and make sure know how to use it and that it eats battery reserve like a monster.
