I have looked at getting something different than my 30-06 for about 35 yrs.....I now use 165 Nosler AB's in the same Rem. 700,with improvements since I bought it used.

might be tough to get those higher velocities from a 7-08 with the more common 20" & 22" barrels

Flip a coin, it's like comparing a 308 to a 270 win. Out 500 to 600 yds you may want to look at a 7 mag or .280AI. For distances within 3-400 take you pick of the one you shoot the best and practice at those distances.
