so, a couple years ago they were coming out with the 2 mile and 5 mile radios that were 2 watts. Now I see 35 miles radios that are still 2 watts. Are they just labeling them differently or do they really get that much better range? Are they comparable to 5 watt VHF radios? I don't see how they get better range, especially 33 miles more range and still be 2 watts. What am I missing?

I bought a set of Motorola T9680's a couple of years ago that are advertised for 28 mile range, and I'll say that once you get out past a couple of miles it gets pretty sketchy. In the fine print on the manual it says that to get the 28 mile range you would need direct line of sight and perfect atmospheric conditions, and I suspect that's the case with all those radios that advertise 25+ mile ranges.

so bottom line is the so called "30 mile" radios are no better then the "5 mile" radios?
