Randy Newberg breaks down a common scope mountain mistake and walks you through how to correctly mount a scope instead.

It’s important to choose the right rings when mounting a scope to ensure proper eye relief and avoid any contact between the scope and the barrel. Randy Newberg highlights the common mistake of selecting the wrong rings, especially when mounting a scope with a large objective lens.

To achieve maximum eye relief, the scope is typically moved further back in the rings. However, if the rings are not high enough or if the scope is too large, the objective end of the scope (referred to as the “bell”) can come in contact with the barrel. This can lead to significant issues with accuracy and consistency.

In his video, Randy intentionally demonstrates how this problem can occur and then provides guidance on how to prevent it from happening. It’s always important to pay attention to the specifications and requirements of your scope, and choose appropriate rings that allow for proper clearance between the scope and the barrel.

Proper mounting of a scope is crucial for achieving accurate and consistent results, whether it’s at the range or in the field. By following the recommended guidelines and ensuring adequate clearance between the scope and barrel, you can avoid potential issues and enjoy a better shooting experience.
