20 year old Model 700 30:06 Practical advice needed
I had an old 30-06 from the late 90's and decided to do the same thing. I went with a Magpul Hunter 700 stock and have been very happy with it. The accuracy at distance has increased dramatically. -

I personally don't think 8's are enough. I have a pair of 10's I use quite a bit and a pair of 12's I use for both free hand and tripod use (mostly tripod use). -

Deer Rifle help
This year I ended up buying a Ruger American 6.5 Creedmoor for ~$500 and put a Vortex Diamondback Tactical FFP 6-24x50 scope on it for ~$400 and am very happy with its performance so far. I am very much looking forward to using it in WY for Antelope this year.
