I just finished The Sun Is a Compass by Caroline Van Hemert. Its a memoir of a young couple who rowed/hiked/skied from Seattle, through Alaska/Yukon/NWT to the Arctic Ocean, and then back through the Alaskan interior. Very well written and engaging journal.

    Breathable hot weather hunting boot?

I have been doing most of my warm weather hiking in Garmont T8 Bifidas lately. Good supportive sole, very comfortable after break-in. Fairly budget. Very breathable compared to lots of other boots. Dry fast. Only cost like $140. They are an Army approved uniform boot, so you do have the tactical...

    What's your go-to Hunting Pack?

I wish I could go with Kuiu or Mystery Ranch Metcalf or something but I just can't afford it at this moment. I've been eyeing this Alps Outdoor pack as a budget alternative, but I haven't had a chance to lay my hands on it to see how it feels. Might be worth a look if you're planning on carrying...

    The Social Dilemma on Netflix

I think it's a shallow look at the problem and it's highly sensationalized to the point of being dishonest. It's no different to all the other moral panics we've seen when new technologies emerge, like the idea that violent video games are at the heart of society's collapse. Instead of blaming...

Both are excellent books. My other favorite Abbey book, which may be even more accessible than Desert Solitaire, is The Journey Home, a collection of short essays/stories/recollections, much in the style of Desert Solitaire, but covering more territory.

At the moment I am finishing Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro and I must say that it is amazing. Its heartwarming and clever and overall just beautiful. The man truly did deserve his nobel prize in literature.
