Optimum magnification range on scope for elk rifle?
3X - anything. I have found over the years that a lower low end is way more useful than a higher high end. I don't even like using my 4.5-14 anymore after getting into the Leupold HD lineup with the 3X low end. My buddy insisted on a 6-24 for his first elk hunt. He missed an opportunity... -

I just bought 180 rds of 300 PRC ammo. So in my mind, I am committed to buying a rifle in 300 PRC. Then maybe when I am done with that, the 7mm PRC will be an option..... I need a less expensive hobby!!!!- LongCut

Scope ideas
Have you ever tried a "red dot" before? I shot a buck at around 1130 last year. He was uphill and had the sun behind him. That red dot made a huge difference..... I bought my first Leupy HD without the firedot reticle, and have some regret now. Better to have it and not need it in my opinion. -

7mm PRC? I would say I wish I would have waited, but now I have a 6.5 PRC. I intend on a 300 PRC, and should have stockpiled so ammo when I had the chance a few months ago. Leupold VX5 HD
I have three VX5s. Only regret is not getting the firedot. I too am very happy with the 44mm objective. So last year I bought a VX6 with the firedot. Love it. -

Leupold 5HD 3x15 15x44 - CDS - ZL 2
I dont think he has done the math, but he does come out of the woods with an unfilled tag and a headache most days……. 100 yards is about an average shot where we deer hunt. But he was going elk hunting and wanted to mount the hubble telescope on his .270. I tried to talk him out of it, but failed.
