Tell us about your elk failures

Everyone talks about the times that they did well and killed something wonderful, or at least put some meat in the freezer. Nobody ever tells the stories about the times that they screwed it up or things were just stacked against them. I don't have any elk stories yet. YET! Lets hear your...

What reloading manual should I get?

I went online and downloaded a bunch of info. I also found some books that I will hit the next time I go to Cabelas.

What reloading manual should I get?

All I plan on reloading is 30-06, 6mm Rem, and maybe some .223. I can't find the old ones the old man had, so I figure I might as well get some that I know the location of. Should I get some, or maybe just go with online recipes?

    Trappers

For those who think that a skunk can't spray if he can't raise his tail, you are in for a fragrant education. Always try to shoot them in the vitals and never in the head. They rarely spray when shot in the vitals, but rarely do not spray when head shot.

Cost of reloading vs factory loads.

I have boat loads of brass and bullets from the old man. I have about 20 pounds of Herters 101 which has been stored in the dark and in a dry place. The stuff is damned near as old as I am. I figure that I can work up some loads with that and not break the bank. Since I have all of the reloading...

Cost of reloading vs factory loads.

I am wondering, based upon a comment made by another member, DirtclodAZ who said " Shoot factory loads.I hand loaded for 40yrs. Can,t match Factory loads. Light loads for children.(Hand load) Factory for Men. Send a couple more slugs,It shows you care!! " Is it still worth our time to...

30 06 for elk and the ilk

Well, I hope it doesn't any time soon. I am learning something here. I could have learned this stuff from my dad, but then he would have seen another opportunity to force me to sit at a table in the basement and learn (or try to learn) every little detail about ballistics, MV, etc. Then I would...

30 06 for elk and the ilk

Thanks guys. I have not shot one since the last time I shot the old man's Garrand. I have no idea where it went when he died. I wish I had it, but I think I want a bolt action any way.

30 06 for elk and the ilk

Can anyone come up with any legitimate reason not to get a 30 06 for elk and mulies? My friend says .308, but my research shows that the .308 is a shorter version of a 30 06. More range, a little more powder, a little more MV, maybe a little more hitting power.

    Mark K from southern MN

I am Mark K from southern MN. I am 49 years old. I have been hunting whitetails for 30 years. I have shot some nice ones but only one record book deer and the taxi stole it. I hunt, fish, trap, rockhound, and metal detect. I go on at least one epic adventure every year. They usually last about...
