Can you talk me out of getting a GSP

I’ve got a gsp. Excellent hunter, loves waterfowl the most tho. He is not a family dog. He tolerates my kids but is only interested in hunting. Makes for a difficult rest of the year when he’s not out in the field or in the pond.

Trade Florida Guide for a Wyoming "Guide"

I’m a Florida native, been living out west for the last 9 years. Jaws never made me nervous in all my years of inshore/offshore fishing, but grizzly bears are another story. I hunt/live in southeast WY, so I don’t have to worry about them. When I lived in Montana I got into lots of elk and...

Trade Florida Guide for a Wyoming "Guide"

Any reason for focusing on the Yellowstone area? There’s bears up there and bears are scary.

Dog owners- what do you do during elk camp?

@JLS and @wllm1313 That’s really awesome, my GSP is a beast on ducks and other birds but I’d never dream of taking him out for anything else. I think the bottom line is most shouldn’t take their dog to elk camp, you two (and I’m sure some others) being the exception that proves the rule.

    WY Sierra Madre's

Hunted the Sierras this year. I saw zero hunters out where the elk were. Opening morning I heard maybe 5 shots? I crossed paths with people on trails a couple times and even bugled a couple dudes into range during archery season. Otherwise, I didn’t think the pressure was that bad—I also...

Dog owners- what do you do during elk camp?

I’ve driven by soooooo many camps with barking dogs in kennels or dogs chasing off deer and whatever else. I think I’d lose my mind if I came across a dude and his dog out hunting in the elk woods. If you’re on private land, do what you want. But on public, have a little consideration for...

    Vacuum Seal

Seems super unnecessary and not enough juice for the amount of squeeze. How much volume is your kit taking up? May need to look at the rest of your pack list if you’re having to resort to vacuum sealing stuff.

    Little Belt Mountains Honey Holes

I hunted the little belts for a few years when I was stationed in Great Falls. Best assignment I’ve had. Killed my first bull there and missed a couple bruisers too. In my experience, I could find lots of bulls in the summer, then they’d disappear in September, then show right back up to the...

    Bugle Report

Had a nice conversation with a couple loud mouth spikes showing off for their girlfriends in souther WY. There may have been some bigger boys around but they weren’t as talkative. Going back out after this cold front pushed through, hopefully that brings them in to the cows.

    Colorado 76

Let me first start off by not being a douche and hitting you with the standard super sarcastic and unwelcoming “Welcome to HT” comment”... Anyhow, I hunted 76 last September. Shoot me a pm and I’ll give you some details. Good luck!

What’s your backcountry archery game plan?

I’m heading out on my second back country solo archery hunt in mid September. I had a great hunt last year but wanted to ping the group about your daily or overarching game plan. Do you take a trail in or do you just bomb off into the dark timber from the truck? Are you hunting north facing...

    Summer scouting Montana general tags

In my experience scouting versus hunting in Montana, summer was a great time of year to see lots of bulls. I had multiple big bulls on my trail cameras and had glassed up a few bachelor groups of 20+ bulls in the area I planned on hunting. Now come September, they were all completely gone from...

Dang man, that’s rough! I guess I feel a little better seeing I’m not alone in my failed pursuit. Must have been the moon, right? Haha

Man, I hope that was it. Otherwise I’m seriously concerned with my elk finding abilities. Damn you Cory Jacobsen and your article “Which week for elk hunting in 2019”!!! Haha

They’re Lowa Zephyr HI GTX. I think the problem is I didn’t get to do any real hiking in them, especially nothing with any grade. It’s 100% my fault for not taking the proper steps to ensure my footwear was good to go before heading to the mountains. My Danner Pronghorns were perfect right out...

    A miracle happened

Boom! That’s awesome. I’d loooooooove to have a spike in my freezer right instead of tag soup... he’d also look great next to the one I have on my wall!

Sounds about right... I ran into one group in the woods who said they helped pack out a bull of someone else in their group. Other than that, everyone else said they hadn’t had much luck.

Thanks man. I’ve been so focused on elk this year that I haven’t really done much to scout on base. I’m going Monday to get tags and such. If you’re ever looking for a duck hunting partner, my gsp and I are always ready! Haha
