Best Pack for Day Hunts Plus Haul Meat

After suffering under an Eberlestock myself I switched to a SJK rail hauler. I think eberlestock is a well made pack for the price, but it's way too heavy and the ergonomics are not suited for heavy hauling whatsoever. My just one self destructed on me a couple years ago with what I'd estimate...

    "The Bob" Elk - 2017

Wow, I grew up in and around the Bob and I've also drug a heavy sled in the snow, and I have nothing but respect for your adventure. Good on you for going anyways despite horses, that would be a deal breaker for a lot of folks. Next time I think I have a heavy pack I'll remember I could be...

    Which tent??

If you're hunting in the fall some place where the bugs aren't too bad, I'd look pretty close at the Black Diamond Megalight, once you get the hang of pitching it you'll never go back to a traditional tent. It's also within the price range of some of these tents being mentioned.

    How do they do it?

I definitely don't have an ultra light set up, in fact i've never weighed it because I don't really care, but I have noticed some big differences with a few changes. The biggest change was ditching the heavy internal framed eberlestock pack and going with a lightweight external frame pack and...

Wyoming, Who lives there in this Forum?

My family and I love it here. I grew up in the Flathead Valley of Montana and my wife is from Bend OR. Many people have asked us why we would leave such incredible places to live in WY, but that is exactly why, people have heard of these incredible places and they had become way too crowded and...

Water - how do you carry it?

I carry a 1.5L nalgene and a 1.5L Kleen Kanteen. I've never had one leak and the stainless kleen Kanteen doubles as an emergency "kettle" if I need to heat water over a fire once the cap is removed. I also have cocoons for both for cold weather, bladders and hoses freeze too easily. I've also...

New poles - Leki or Black Diamond

BD all the way. A lot of their stuff is pretty cheap for "higher end" gear but they nailed it with their poles. Avoid the twist lock poles, they will always fail. The clamp system on the bd poles is repairable in the field and I've never seen one break. I guided mountaineering on cascade...

    New Backpack Idea

thanks, Yeah someone really could rip it off pretty easily but I've explored every option and they all end with the need for big $$ which I don't have an excess of especially with a brand new kid. But that's ok maybe it'll spark a new movement towards truly light and effective convertible...

    New Backpack Idea

The padding is somewhat rudimentary I agree, but the theme of the pack is ultra light so there is a little inherent discomfort. I feel like a lot of packs make up for poor load support by adding tons of padding thus making a really heavy, bulky pack. I've carried a boned out elk hind quarter...

New (to me anyway) Suspended tent in the air.

Very interesting, reminds me of a portaledge used for big wall climbing. I actually considered hauling my portaledge up into the woods so I could sleep up off the ground in the trees, and away from large 4 legged visitors. My only concern with the that tent would be sliding to the middle of it...

    New Backpack Idea

It seems pretty solid for how simple it is, i've never had issues with it twisting on me with up to an elk's quarter worth of weight. The "meat shelf" keeps the frame rails spread apart and stable. The frame is pieces that I put in a tent pole bag so they don't clank together in the pack. It...

    New Backpack Idea

Hey everybody, not sure if this is pertinent to this topic, but I had a hunting pack idea I've been working on for several years and was looking for some input or ideas on it. It's a standard line-gear style lumbar pack for hunting. Unlike a standard day pack, there is nothing to catch on...

    Tikka T3 Shooters…Anyone Out There

I bought a T3 7mm RM last year before hunting season to replace grandpas old .06 which didn't feel confident with past 300yds. I shot a variety of ammo and settled on the Hornady Superformance SST 154gr. This round was consistently accurate up to my 500yd limit. I took a nice bull with a...

    What to use for water

I've had good results with both the Sawyer and the Katadyn basecamp. I leave the basecamp in, well, basecamp and take the sawyer with me for topping off bottles or drinking from seeps. I like the fact that I can use the sawyer in conjunction with the basecamp if the filter clogs or breaks for...

MSR Whisperlite Stoves; Think they're any good?

Liquid gas stoves can be temperamental for sure. It seems like a lot has to do with fuel quality and keeping it clean, having a spare parts/cleaning kit is must. Depending on the length of my trip and partners, I usually bring my XGK (personal fav) and a jetboil. A big pot goes on the XGK and...

    How do you choose?

Yeah, it's usually a multiple trip operation when I get an elk. Fortunately the lumbar pack fits in the dry bag if it needs to be hung for awhile during load hauls. The bears are thick enough where I hunt that everything needs to be able to go in a tree if you're not around.

    How do you choose?

This is my backcountry hunt set-up. It's an old Jansport pack frame with everything but the frame and straps stripped off. A lumbar day pack for actual hunting once at camp. A 60L sealed nylon dry bag for camp stuff and food with P-cord already attach for hanging in bear country. A waterproof...

    Boots

Kenetreks changed my whole perspective on what a comfortable and nimble boot can be. I used a lot of high end boots when mountaineering was my job and none of them have come close to the comfort of these boots. Despite the hype, I've put 4 hard seasons on them and they're still...

Grizzly Experience - Wy Elk Hunt

I have definitely had more grizzly sightings than elk this season. It sure is a good feeling to be able to walk away after an encounter, I had one very similar to yours last year.
