    What caliber are you using to get pass through shots on elk

    It is more about the bullet and shot placement than it is about the caliber. I like barnes bullets for two holes. My son shot a moose this year with a 270 wby and a 129 barnes. Easy pass through.

    First youth hunting rifle?

    I would lean 243/6mm creed or bump up to the 6.5 creed. No flies on the 7-08 or 270 though either. Look at tikkas or for a budget the Ruger American predator rifles.

    Recommendations for a new varmint rifle

    For bang for the buck I would pick a Ruger American predator in 223. It is twisted to shoot heavies and the rifles really shoot. Otherwise I would consider the tikka models for the same reason but they add a little more to the budget. 223 ammo is plentiful and lots of options from the factory.
