    'Swatting' at birds

    Sometimes the grouse just won't fly. I used a good number of rocks and sticks on some grouse hoping to get them in the air with no luck. Just had to ground sleuce 'em. I still enjoy trying to get a big blue in the air as it dive through the thick Doug Fir. Good challenge.

    Road hunting

    The grouse in Utah tend to use the roadsides until early September and are easy to find. That is why the hunt starts later in September. Gives the broods a chance to get back into the forest. I often use the presence of road birds as an indication the area would be good for a quick walk...

    cold weather gear??

    I love my Carhart jacket but would never use it hunting. Too big. I tend to cover a lot of ground when I hunt so lighter is better. Fleece and gore-tex is good or many companies now make less noisy, waterproof fabric in camo patterns. Good stuff. Always carry more warm clothes than you need...
