Back up rifle for big game hunts

I only have one big game rifle, but since I hunt not too far from home I don't worry much about it. The rifle travels in a hard case all the way to my tent (the day before moose season begins). Once there I ready it for hunting. My backup is a .454 Casull, but I have never hunted with it...

    Bigfoot

Nothing wrong with what you believe on. My post about "Big Butt" meant to be funny, and I hope you liked it. By the way, when sleep in my tent during moose season, the only "big foot" that worries me is "big grizzly bear" in the middle of the night.

    Bigfoot

Nah...A person on drugs could never understand and intellectual "geologist's" mind like Mr. Oregon's. He is just a very respectful guy, who is always very helpful to miners, hunters, or anybody else. Happiness has nothing to do with drugs.

    Bigfoot

I hope you don't mind the following story. I found it at a metal detection forum a couple of years back, so it is not mine. However, it is so well written that I had to save it. I hope it will make you laugh, because whoever wrote it is good telling stories. Speaking of Bigfoot...

    Ramon Fernandez Moose Picture......

Anything is possible where I hunt, but I have only seen black bears and wolves. I usually see fresh grizzly tracks on the trail near my tent, but these haven't showed themselves during the day when I can see them. I have had to run black bears away from my campsite a couple of times. A few...

    Hunting MOOSE.........

As you can see in an e-amil sent to me, The Alaska Outdoors Counsel opposes the proposal. Anu e-mail, letter, etc. could be directed the The Board Of Game. I don't know their address, but F&G may have it. Here is part of the e-mail sent to me: "At its last Board of Directors meeting, the...

    Celebrities and hunting?

I just read a Ted Nugent story on deer hunting from a stand. He also wrote a book titled "God, Guns, and Rock And Roll." I have also read some of his stories relating to hunting in Alaska, and a few months back hear him talking about his book at The Michael Reagan's Show on the radio.

    cold weather gear??

Wear loose clothing in layers. Avoid cotton garments since they collect moisture from your body. Polypropylene tops and bottoms, then loose clothing, and coat. If you get too warm you could always shed some of the clothing (put them in a backpack ) and keep on going. Lightweight rain gear...

    Ramon Fernandez Moose Picture......

The guy is "Ray" from Alaska. The following story is as small as the moose I killed last year: I arrived to our campsite a day before the season opened, and proceeded to unpack my ATV and trailer. The trailer consists of an angle-iron frame of rectangular shape. This frame holds a 16-gauge...

    35 Whelen on Moose

Mike: You are correct about the .35 Whelen and its use for moose. It should be an outstanding moose and bear gun, much like the .338-06. I would be more than happy with any of these two. One can handload for the .35 Whelen and get more velocity than those shown in reloading manuals, but I...

    35 Whelen on Moose

Mike: I killed a moose last year with one shot through the lungs with my .338 Magnum. The moose was 100 yards out, and after the first shot I didn't even load the chamber again, because by then the moose was dropping on its chest. It took maybe two second for it to drop. I shot it with a...

    Moose hunting story

MOOSE HUNTING 1997 This story is about my hunting trip of September 1997. I arrived to our campsite the afternoon before the moose season began, and several hours ahead of my hunting partners Jesse and Bob. It was cool and cloudy, so I decided to build an A-frame structure on which I could...

Did you feel the earth move in Kodiak?

I have been listening to the news about all the earthquakes you are having in Kodiak this week... Pretty good one at 6.9 in the R. Scale! I hope everything is OK over there. Ray from North Pole, where the ground shakes every now and then too.

    Why IMR powder?

I use 75 grains of RL-22, or 73 grains of RL-19 with the Combined Tecnology's 230-grain FS bullet. Nice and compressed loads work great for me, and seem to keep pressure within safe levels. RL-19 is a little faster than RL-22. The loads listed above are maximum.

Wher are you hunting in 2001 ?!?!?!

The only large game I hunt: Moose. I travel about 100 miles from my home (in Alaska), park my old Ford truck near a road, and ride my ATV 8 miles out on a muddy trail to where I setup my campsite. We drag along what we call "meat trailers," which are small trailers that have ATV knobby...

Wher are you hunting in 2001 ?!?!?!

AK Roadkill, I live in North Pole, and hunt about 40 or 50 miles from Fox. I see black bears all the time, and a few fresh grizzly tracks near my campsite (in the mud after the rain). Grizzly bears don't usually show themselves in the middle of the day, at least not to me. I have had wolves...
