    Wild Hog Weight

It is not hard to tell fat hogs from skinny ones. Higgins and Bond bayed this sow up a couple of weeks ago. This is a big sow! I tip the scales at 240lbs. [This message has been edited by hicntry (edited 02-14-2001).]

    Decoy Dogs

I have tried using airedales. My males have all been used extensively on hogs and bears. They are much to aggressive and intimidating. I am now starting a young female for coyotes and I think she will work out great. A lot of guys on the coyotegods board use airedales.

wheres all the bear hunters ?

Here is a picture of last years bear. He was caught by Winchester (left) and Remington. This bear laid Winchester up for about 2 months( chewed on his front, right leg and broke several bones in his foot). Made a nice rug. ---------------------------------------------High Country Airedales...

    beginner bear question

CC, a 30/06 is more than enough gun. I have a friend up here (35 mi. east of Fresno) that is quit reasonable. I think he charges $100.00 a day and $600.00 for the bear. He has some good hounds and if you have never hunted behind dogs it is an experience.

How big can a hog get before it is not good to eat

Bigtusker, maybe your nose doesn't work as well as mine and mine doesn't work very good. I find it hard to enjoy eating something that smells like someone is pissin in the skillet while its cooking. If it wasn't for the smell it doesn't taste bad but you have to eat it outside with a stiff...

How big can a hog get before it is not good to eat

Well Elliot, boars past about 150lbs. are dog food. Got to cut them up and freeze them for two weeks to kill trichnosis but I have had some big ones that the dogs wouldnt even eat. Sows are good eating even if they are 250lb. The falvor will vary some according to what they have been eating.

    Shot placement?

I stick with the head shots because of the dogs Steve. I use a .44 mag SA. Had to try the 45/70 Wed. and I am impressed. The 300gr. Hornady is not for large hogs but it did kill this sow but after finding the bullet from the chest cavity I would not use it again. ------------------ Don Turnipseed

    Hogs-N-Dogs

Got some new predator calling tapes the other day and was going out with Higgins and Bond to try the out. On the way down to a calling spot yesterday, I pulled over to let the dogs empty out. well they took off up the mountain at a dead run. Never did get to try the tapes out but all was not...

What do yo use for hogs?

Ca. Hunt, I am real carefull about where my dogs are when I drop the hammer. The big peoblem I see on insisting that every one shoot a pistol is that most people (present company not included) can't hit the broad side of a barn. If they wound the hog the dogs stand a good chance of getting hurt...

What do yo use for hogs?

I have always used n a .44 Rem. Mag. Ruger SA. With dogs it gets to be a close up and personal thing...5 to 20 ft. This morning I woke up and it was 34 degrees in the house so I figured I would take a couple of the dogs hunting because the truck has a great heater and it would be a lot quicker...

    Hogs-N-Dogs

This hunt required going in some heavy brush down on the side of a mountain to get to the dogs and this boar. Close quarters like this make a hunt pretty exciting at times. This boar was none to happy when we got to them. He had been fending off Winchester, Remington, and Bond for a while and...

    Hogs-N-Dogs

Here is a sow that Higgins, Remington, and Winchester ( left to right) caught. As I am taking the picture I am also trying to figure out how to get the dogs to back off so this one can be left for another day and give her time to get a little bigger. Never did accomplish that. Handleing the dogs...

    got a pig question...

huntrjon's source hit it on the head....food is everywhere. I use a 150qt. cooler during the summer to cool them quick. Gutem, skinem and if need be cut both hams off and lay them on top of the carcass. Throw a sack or two of ice in the chest cavity. The 150qt igloos are available at costco many...

    Hogs-N-Dogs

There is an amusing story behind this picture. My brother Mike had a model 88 Win. in .308 and I had told him it was useless in this heavy brush. He needed to get a .44mag. He always laughed. On this particular day I was roding Higgins (back) and after about 5 min. he took off up the mountain...

    Hogs-N-Dogs

They are totally silent like some curs. I used to locate them by the hogs squealing but then a couple of 300lb. plus boars with bad attitudes taught them to bark so I could get there and help. I will take a good bay job any day to catching.

    Hogs-N-Dogs

Here is a nice boar that was bayed up by Winchester, Bond, and Reminton (pictured). The dogs had this guy backed up in a mass of live oak when we got there and it was a real job getting this one out of the brush.
