    Out With a Bang

2024 went out with a bang! My son and I spent the afternoon in a blind with some amazing people, enjoying some incredible decoying action. Boss 2 3/4” #4s out of a 20 and 12 worked just fine.

    Fields of Dreams

Growing up in the west, I never thought much about hunting whitetails. In fact, the thought of hunting whitetails seemed boring – maybe in part because all of the hunting shows, which aired on the channels we had, seemed to show only whitetail hunts. My, how things have changed! The past few...

    2024 Sandhill Crane

It was an absolutely gorgeous morning to be out chasing birds. The birds worked the spread as planned. #7.5 TSS out of a 20 wrecked havoc, like always! Much to his dismay, we were done in time for my favorite hunting buddy to make it to school.

    Changing Colors and Bugling Bulls

Like so many of you, fall is my favorite time of the year. From the cooler weather, providing relief from hot summers, to the changing colors on the mountain, and of course, the bugle of bull elk. After many years of "unsuccessful" emails, I was able to draw an early rifle tag. With tag in hand...

    Something new . . .

With the wife and kids on the east coast, visiting her sister, I wanted to try a place that I've never been and catch a fish that I've never caught. I tend to fall victim to the same-place-same-thing mentality. As such, I decided to go boulder hopping in search of grayling. The boulder fields...

    Banding Geese

Earlier today I had the wonderful opportunity to help with banding geese. Airboats were used to round up the birds and funnel them toward the trap. Each bird was aged, sexed, banded, and then released. In total, 136 birds are sporting some new jewelry! What an amazing way to spend a morning!

    Henry “Survival” .22

After reading Hatchet to my children a few years ago, I decided to get some sort of breakdown .22 to put in the vehicle emergency kit. I’ve used it periodically to do some plinking to pass the time. Yesterday my son played hookie from school and we attempted to make our way to a lake, full of...

    Sheep Pics December 2023

The week between Christmas and New Years is always a favorite to go look at bighorns in the unit by my home. The sheep are in small bands, in easily accessed areas. Current estimates put the herd at 150 animals, 1/3 of population objective. Sheep sure are cool animals!

    Bolt Face Etching

Quick question for you gun nuts, from a functionality standpoint, should one be concerned about the etching on this bolt face? The backstory - a neighbor of mine, who is new to hunting, brought over his new rifle to show me. The rifle was purchased off of gunbroker.com and the condition was...

    Granddaddy's Gun

Back in 1949 two members of the “greatest generation” were married and settled in a small town. The young bride came from an affluent family; the young groom came from quite the opposite. The young bride wanted to give her husband a special wedding present. Knowing of his love of pheasant...

    2023 Sandhill Crane and Goose

My son was lucky enough to draw a crane tag this year and punched his tag on the first flock that decoyed! We were able to have a crane/goose combo hunt and it was simply amazing. We shared the field with some wonderful folks and were able to fill all the crane tags and knock down a few...

    My "Best" Buck

Let me preface this by saying that I am not a mule deer hunter, I'd rather hunt pretty much anything else. After chatting with my then-nine-year-old son earlier this year around application time, he said he'd like to pack back in somewhere and hunt deer. Fast forward a few months, and with a tag...

    UT Sage Grouse 2023

Had a wonderful morning with my favorite hunting partner. We were both able to fill our two-bird permits. Moved lots and lots of birds this morning. There’s just something about a sunrise in the west. My son won the biggest grouse contest - one of his topped the scale at 5.5 pounds.

    2023 Father/Son Montana Bison Hunt

When I think about the west, I can't help but think of a few of the iconic species - mule deer, sage grouse, antelope, bighorn sheep, etc. But the one that stands out to me is the bison. As such, when I heard about the opportunity to hunt free range bison on the Crow Indian Reservation in...

    Youth General Season 2023 Success

This morning was the opener for Utah’s general season youth hunt. The pre-scouted birds worked perfectly. Two jakes were the first to arrive and at 15 steps, only one was able to escape. I REALLY wish this kid would put some shape to the hat brim. 🤦🏻‍♂️

    SidexSide or Over/Under

I'm in the market for either a 20 or 28 gauge over/under or sidexside. I never thought I'd be interested in a sidexside, but I was handling one over the weekend and really liked the feel of it. My budget is $3k. Over/under or sidexside? I've always been a Benelli fan, so I'm seriously...
