Ignore the date. This was in late Sept. Buck fawn is feeling his oats, making a move on mom. (No judging!)

308 cal bullet recommendation for bison?

This. Works like the devil on elk.

    Blood Meridian - I Don’t Get It….(Spoilers)

Thoughts: * McCarthy is not for everyone. I like reading McCarthy but can't stomach Tarantino movies, for example. For me, i can handle violence in books but not so much in movies. * I know a lot of readers, better educated and more sophisticated than me, who cannot stomach him. You're not...

We all know Black Bears only kill calf elk.

When it comes to bears two words I avoid are "always" and "never." Still, something seems off with that elk. Not too robust. Maybe sick or clipped by a car or carrying an arrow or bullet. I think the bear knows something about the elk that we don't know. What a scene to observe though!

    Trail camera suggestions

Since I wrote this one of my Muddy's gave up the ghost. I replaced it with another Browning, which a bear damaged but didn't destroy.

Fed proposal to vastly expand motorized access.

We all need access, but it's a tight balance. When there is too much traffic, elk habitat simply is no longer functional elk habitat. The result, over and over, is fewer tags, less opportunity. It ain't rocket surgery, but it is biology. Bigger threat than spot burning by influencers, IMO.

    Are bear fences worth it?

I used a remote electric fence around a base camp in the Bob in a September elk hunt. Kept the kitchen and the meat safe. Seemed to work well. Every system has its pluses and minuses. I've never used the ultralight models but they seem like a good idea where hanging trees are scarce. Keep us...

    Good writing

I cannot wrap my head around the idea that Deary has been gentrified. Hoots was a must-stop after Salmon River trips lo those many year ago. The eatery that comes to mind is getting pie after Selway backpack trips at the Syringa Cafe on US 12. Haven't been that way in decades. Is it still around?

Not a big bear but a pretty one. Since it is a bust for huckleberries this year, he seems to be trying to fatten up on ants. Every log and rock is rolled over. Still not sure what he is doing out on a hot summer afternoon. He mauled my camera shortly after this shot.

Petition to mandate hunters to carry bear spray in Montana.

stupid petition. i'm a big fan of bear spray but forcing it on people will only make them resist it more. this will just trigger a big 'f-u" from folks who are skeptical about bear spray and don't like being told what to do. if getting more people to use bear spray is the goal, this petition...

    Elk bullet in Grizzly country

I think you're overthinking it. I shoot 165 Barnes copper bullets in a 308 and they go plumb through an elk, so I would feel comfortable shooting a grizzly with it, if I had to. But you probably won't have to. And if I were in a close-range scrap, I would want pepper spray over a rifle or even a...
