Most modern centerfire rifles can hit at 600y, but that doesn't not mean they do it well. 6mmBR, 6mmcreedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .243 will all do better at 400--600 yards than a .223. Also, a rifle set up to do well at 600y is not really a rifle I would carry into the field for hunting...
I've been lurking on this thread since it started less than a month ago and now it's grown to 7 pages. That's a lot of interest.
My first centerfire rifle was a .30-06 that I bought in 1967. It is a Herter's Model U-9 action that is 6 1/2" long. For 10 years I used that rifle for everything...
Exactly!
"Antelope, whitetail, mule deer, elk, black bear, hog, grizzly"...I've never hunted hogs, but I have hunted all of these others with my .30-06. I even used to load 125 grain bullets in my .30-06 for shooting prairie dogs...where I was once stopped by a Game Warden who wanted to know...
I shot a lope at 254 yds with my AR. Bullet was 62gr ttsx. Front quartering shot. Bullet entered high on the left brisket and lodged against the hide in front of the right rear leg. Bullet was perfectly mushroomed. Lope was DRT. It was a wall hanger. If I figure out how to post pics I will do it.
Our local range actually finished this project, so this question has turned into less of a fantasy and more of a reality. They put in steel at 350, 450, and 600. I have a heavy bias toward Tikka, with my other two rifles being that platform. The next question really comes down to cartridge. I...
I likely will be using my 30-06 with hand-loaded 150 Speer Hot Cor over H4350. That load has killed a lot of game for me.
I may try .223 in my AR or single shot with 55 Speer SP this year.
My daughter uses a .243 with 100 grain Sierra Pro Hunters. Has worked on 3 deer, a sheep and an...
Good info. I have also always had spectacular performance with gamekings. I've used them in .223 to bring down 225 lb hogs in Texas, 7mm-08 and .30-06 on whitetails.
I have been looking all around where I live here in UT and haven't been able to find R22, 23, any of the 4831.
If anyone...
300 BLK pistol. 130 grain Speer Hot Cor. Did more damage internally than my 3030 did a few weeks later. Made a mess. 135 lb Tom up in tree. Through the elbow and into the lungs. Jellied everything in the chest.
I would not hesitate to use this or any of my 223 AR's for deer or antelope...
Using a shotgun and deer slug I have gone for the neck shot several times when the vitals are obstructed, I can’t say any of those deer have taken another step as it puts them down in their tracks. If I was near a property line I did not want the deer to cross or a steep valley that the deer...
Well said. My only thing i want to rant about is it seemed like once the 6.5 needmore came out it was a “race” to the bottom of how small a caliber can you shoot an elk with? I would think everyone would shoot the largest caliber they comfortably and accurately shoot? There is another forum with...
If you can find ammo, I think a rifle similar in form factor to your big game rifle in .223 is a better practice tool than the often much smaller and lighter zero recoil .22LR, but any practice off the bench is good practice.
One little drill I did with my son was to put 3 - 18" paper targets...
I had the same desires for the same exact reasons as you. So I bought a couple of wsm rifles. Currently I have LEUPOLD VX3s on them but will put LR duplex type scope which has BDC type reticle. Zero at 200 yards (high power setting)with a second focal plane scope and I’ll make it work. Prior to...
This is a timely post, been thinking of getting a new firearm for elk / moose(?). This may help the decision making process - or add frustrations and cause me to stick with my bow :)
So I guess the bull moose my girlfriend killed with the 25-06 and a 115TSX should never have happened? One shot, that little bullet went completely thru both shoulders and exited. Went 25yds and fell over.
So this story about the failed 243 shot makes me wonder. Oh, I am not a big fan of the 243 as a deer cartridge but if it was all I had I'd use in in a sec. maybe if your friend had used a different bullet or chose a different shot the outcome would have been different. The 243 did not fail, the...
OK, I've only been hunting since the mid '60s, annually in Colorado or Montana along with a dozen or more international hunts, and I have never heard of class 2 or 3 game animals, and what I thought a manbun was is a girly-boy haircut that looks like the knot tying off a garbage bag.
So back to...
