I might pack my .223 for bears this spring, it’s short and light and barely noticeable when strapped to a pack. Would be a great rifle to pack around while looking for elk antlers if nothing else. I have two Howa Minis, one 20" 6ARC and a 22" 223AI, love them both. Neither have the dreaded heavy trigger if cycling the bolt fast and both are very accurate. It's not the cartridge it's the shooter. How many new hunters gather this info and take off with it? My point is not that a small cartridge won't work. Done it. The size of the bullet does not matter if you can put where it needs to be. Magnum or otherwise. mtmuley- mtmuley

First youth hunting rifle?

.243 or 6.5 prc
My 11 yo old is about 65 lbs. He shoots lights out with his .223. Tried the 7mm-08 with Hornady custom lite 120 g SST's as he has antelope and deer tags for this year. I think the noise from the 20" barrel is what threw him off. Have a 6.5 Grendel on the way in the Howa mini action. -

My neighbor use a 223 for deer and antelope every year. He pretty much fills his tag with his coyote gun when he is checking cows. He killed his goat at 380yrd a couple of years ago.
