The normal 2 sizes for burger with a dual grinder. The large and the small plates. The collar stayed ice cold so I don't think that was it. I used to grind with my dad with one of those Cabelas grinders and it needed one of the cold packs. This one and the time we actually grinded the collar...- elkocd

Yes, I thought of that, but I honestly can't see how that could be it. The meat was still almost frozen when it went into the packs and the freezer was -10. I can't see how it could cool any faster in an at home setup. I have wondered if it could have something to do with the suet I used, but...- elkocd

I always try to cut my own elk and make burger when I can depending on if I am away from home when I harvest and logistics. This year, after moving to WY I had an entirely new burger grinding set up which in theory should have been better, but all the burger from my sons elk came out really...- elkocd

"prefered"? each region has distinct differences. One is not better than the other, just depends on what type of hunting you want to do. No shortage of elk in any of them. -

I've believe that for deer for sure! But.. not why I'm considering the Gros Ventre for him. As far as elk I don't know that I agree after living near Cody. Some pretty solid elk living deep in the wilderness. -

Not sure what in the area means, but the units directly bordering the park both down there and up here are a different animal compared to just in grizz country. All the park bordering units are the wildest places in the lower 48. Yes, you can hunt the fringes and probbaly get away without horses... -

JFYI there is a reason it has such an early rifle opener. It's serious WY wilderness with as many Grizz and you can handle. As said you have to be hunting with a resident guide in there and you'll need horses unless you just hunt the fringes. I would be thinking more about if you're up for the... -

I hunted 141 last year. It's a very different hunt than the other two. I did shoot a 170ish deer, but saw very few deer as the migration had not really started. He was as high as I could hunt.
