I googled Mearns Quail and read some older postings about hunts around Patagonia, AZ. I drove forest roads and paid attention to parked trucks with dog kennels. I later went to those locations and only bumped a single covey at each. I think the quail are pressured by guides and out of state hunters.
I used a 12ga but really tore the birds up. I am going again this year with a 20 ga.
