Alaska Fishing trip
you could plan to fish out of Homer and do both halibut and trolling for Kings for a couple days (and silvers in later summer.) Bunch of options up here. i can recommend a couple charters if you want me to direct message you.- UncleRick

sorry it took me so long to respond, i don't have much time in either of those units, Im in the kachemak bay area mostly. but i do have friends that hunt both 7 and 14 on a somewhat regular basis, and i'll see if i can get them to pass on some advice for you.- UncleRick

Hunting opportunities around Kenai/Homer area
Lifelong resident of the Kenai peninsula here. What caliber for son?
30-06 with light loads or go with the 270. i learned on a 30-30 and 30-06. if it its something your son might carry for Years, you don't want to get something too light. you never know you might have a chance to take him after elk or moose in the next few years. -

if your into flyfishing it is a good time of year for Coho, halibut and rockfish is still going steady that time of year, and trolling for winter kings is also a fantastic option. but make sure every place your planning to visit is still open. we closed down our Inn and rental cabins in Halibut...- UncleRick

Price point = good scopes
with what leupold, vortex and even nikon making nowadays you will be more than happy with any scope in that price range. I have a couple of the new leupold VX-freedom "budget" scopes and i have been more than happy with them, and they come well under your budget. -
