Alaska Fishing trip
you could plan to fish out of Homer and do both halibut and trolling for Kings for a couple days (and silvers in later summer.) Bunch of options up here. i can recommend a couple charters if you want me to direct message you.- UncleRick

What caliber for son?
30-06 with light loads or go with the 270. i learned on a 30-30 and 30-06. if it its something your son might carry for Years, you don't want to get something too light. you never know you might have a chance to take him after elk or moose in the next few years. -

Price point = good scopes
with what leupold, vortex and even nikon making nowadays you will be more than happy with any scope in that price range. I have a couple of the new leupold VX-freedom "budget" scopes and i have been more than happy with them, and they come well under your budget. -
