I got 2 this morning- success as well!! At last! I was, still am so excited!
I really appreciate the feedback. And you know, if you didn't answer the first questions about elevation and so forth so quickly, after hunting these birds today it may not have mattered, but the match to my experience...
I have a few questions if it's OK...
What elevation did you get this bird? How far was it from water, and what type of water, or were there any other significant landscape features that seemed significant about where you found it?
I notice you're wearing a Final Rise upland vest. I'm...
Good to know.
Wow that's a lot of miles. We did maybe 10-12 miles over 2 days. I guess the one plus is that it's fairly easy terrain, just very exposed so the sun wears my dog down faster.
After following the tips from everyone in this thread and piecing together all else I've learned about duskys, we're definitely coming across birds - 6 or more just yesterday. Unfortunately I'm still striking out on getting a bird, but that's our novice mistakes or my shooting errors. At least...
I got out for another scouting trip this past weekend (skipping location names but went straight west of me as suggested in earlier posts) and saw zero birds - no ptarmigan or grouse. My dog and I scouted from 10.6K - 11.6K', with tree line at this area at around 10.9-11K'. While I remember...
That's really good and actually I had been thinking some of those same thoughts. Since I didn't have any luck finding duskys last season, all I know is from forum posts or web articles and I remembered reading things about females going lower into sage or aspens with their broods for the insects...
Maybe some of it is me being too much of a novice. Plus, my dog has only ever hunted pheasant and chukar (limited experience with geese and ducks), so duskys and ptarmigan are totally new to him. Granted, once he knows what we're after, I'm sure he'll be set to go, but the first bird surprised...
Ahhh, good to know. More gems of info I'll apply when I'm out - much appreciated!
I can't get enough of those high alpine settings. Thinking of scouting for ptarmigan this weekend.
Sorry too for so much grouse talk on top of this ptarmigan post.
Well... I spent the last 2 nights in the Zirkel Wilderness to scout for duskys and (maybe) ptarmigan. It's fantastic terrain and simply being there with my dog makes it obvious why I love living in this state and hunting with my dog so much, but unfortunately we only saw/flushed 2 grouse over...
