To clean or not to clean
Hunt it. I was told by a very good gun maker to only clean my gun when accuracy is not what it used to be. Now that said, if your in a Wyoming wind storm and your dumping grit out of your gun you should probably run a patch or two:) -

What caliber for son?
I would get him a 6.5 creedmoor or 6.5prc. My son shoots a prc that has a break and we will be replacing the barrel soon. My point to that last comment is he shoots it a lot. He enjoys it, it’s easy to shoot 50+ rounds in a few hours and there is nothing better than time behind the trigger. -

Bad back and backpack choice
I have a Stone Glacier and it works great. As unmanly as it sounds, learn to stretch. Hip Flexors and hamstrings need to be stretched regularly. Range finding Binos vs handhead rangefinder for archery?
I have the zeiss and while they are not cheap they are pretty flawless. We range and get consistent results past a mile.
