I believe you're right about the photoperiod being the same length as breeding season. I see lots of roosters strutting in the fall and there are always 1-5 hens around watching. I've learned to look for the hens before shooting the rooster because he won't pay any attention to me

I had a similar experience years ago except I didn't find the extra fish for 2 weeks. It took 3 fishing trips never shutting off the live well to get rid of the smell
For walleyes I'd fish mid lake reefs in 20-30 feet. Use your electronics to find the fish and use live bait rigs with minnows, leeches or crawlers to catch them.
