Don't be afraid to go lower. Look for tracks and fresh droppings, etc. Yes, water is key, but if you're high and there is a lot of it then that will make it tough.

Getting ready for my first time out. You said to look high. Still holding to that advice? Also, what exactly is high for that area. I've looked at Canjallon Mtn and the Ridge while based out of Trout Lakes. So are you saying 10K and above?

Hey all, looks like I found the right place. Just got the word that I'm in for archery elk in unit 52. This will be my first time and am pumped to get in the game. Any insight into 52 would be awesome. Fairly new to New Mexico and so excited to do this.
