I just finished this account of the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal, written by the reporter who broke the story with Ken Rosenthal. I appreciated that the author spent time dissecting the Astros’ diseased organizational culture, which started at the top with owner Jim Crane and GM Jeff...
This is a well-written account of the events leading to and the effects of Gen. Pershing’s 1916-17 expedition into Mexico. I had only the sparsest knowledge of that conflict, and I was surprised to know that I have been to some of the places on this side of the border that Pancho Villa raided.
I picked this up after reading a review of Heller’s new novel in the local paper. Heller borrows a lot of his style from Cormac McCarthy, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and this was a compelling read. Good outdoorsy descriptions and good characters.

This one was a little disappointing. I was hoping for more detail about how Carson outfitted his expeditions, the gear he used, the obstacles he overcame … but this was a dry retelling of the less interesting parts of his life.

I think that whole thing about “most bites are on the upper body” comes from people trying to...
I lived in Des Moines for five years. I don’t have any hunting recommendations but I do recommend the loose meat sandwiches at Maid-Rite and the tenderloin sandwich at the Machine Shed. Also the Iowa chop pork chops on the grill.
