Fatrack, I'd love to do another Stone's hunt, but time and the river flowing negates that for me. I did end up with four sheep on the wall, a Dall's, a Desert and two Rockys, one that made the B&C awards period book (179 1/8. So I 'm not unhappy. GJ
I've gone twice and struck out twice. My guide and I hunted our as*es off and didn't see a legal ram. We saw lots of rams but none that were legal. I felt the area was shot out of legal full curl rams including double broomed rams. These were 14 day hunts In mid September. I went later because I...
Once again, 340 Weatherby with new bullet 255 gr Shock Hammer @3050 fps. Backup, if you want to call it that, 375 H&H 299 gr Shock Hammer @2670 fps. Both should work well. GJ
Get yourself a USFS map as well as OnX and you will be good to go. A lot will depend on this summer's monsoon. It's a big area on both sides of the main highway and water is important. 9 is pretty much flat and thick so glassing is difficult. Get up there and get familar. Elk can be found from...
It took me about 10 years to get over it. Every time I saw a photo of a successful hunt (Stone's) it felt like someone stepping on my grave. Now, I just enjoy vicariously. GJ
Drew an Arizona Desert Sheep tag in 1986 (resident), Colorado Rocky Mtn tag in 1995 (non resident), Arizona Rocky Mtn tag in 2013 (resident).. Bought and paid for an Alaska Dall's in 1988 and two British Columbia Stone's in 1990 and 1991. Four sheep on the wall, no Stone's over two years and 28...
I have been lucky enough to have drawn and harvested an Arizona Desert ram and an Arizona Rocky Mtn ram. No moose or goat here. I'm still working on a AZ bison. FWIW, I did draw and harvest a non resident Colorado Rocky too. Maybe that counts for three. GJ
If you have or know someone who has a airplane I'd fly the area now to get an idea of the topography then fly again just before the season looking for sheep especially rams. It makes your on ground scouting even better. GJ
I've always wondered why Val Browning chambered the A-5 in 16 gauge (the "Sweet 16" ) and never chambered the Superposed in 16 gauge. Really doesn't matter now or then. GJ
I have three Mark Vs, 270 Roy, 340 Roy both in the walnut deluxe version and a Safari Classic 375 H&H in a classic style walnut stock by Weatherby. I also have a Vanguard VGX in the deluxe style walnut stock chambered for 270 Win. I've taken moose, elk, bear, four North American wild sheep...
FWIW. I drew a NR Colorado sheep tag after applying for 10 years. Can't tell you how or why. It just happened. Same thing could happen for you. I've also drawn an Arizona Desert tag and an Arizona Rocky tag (I am an AZ resident). I paid the $$$ for Dall's sheep in Alaska and much bigger $$$$ for...
You might surprise yourself on a mtn. griz hunt. I have run into them twice on Stone's sheep hunts. I carry a 9lb 270 Roy for sheep and would have wished for my 340 which weighs the same as my sheep gun. I guess the weight doesn't bother me (must be weird). I agree about not typically using a...
