Last minute Jitters

Quite a bit is being left at the truck, the bigger tent, sleeping bag and sleeping pad, hatchet, 2 water filters, extra boots, extra food, flashlights, etc. Hiking in a bit, 8 miles, but it may be much closer, depending on how the scouting goes.

Gonna pick a map up when I get there, hopefully. And don’t have a compass yet, that is something I need to get. Any recommendation on what’s a good compass? I haven’t used one since landnav, but that’s been 12 years ago.

When is everyone going after elk? (Or have you started already)

This will be my first time hunting elk, so I’m going to enjoy myself, whether I get an elk or not, gonna take in the mountains and try to soak up every minute of it. Will be gone 15 days, and hope to enjoy every second of it!

Gear list for 1st season backpack elk hunt

I may swap out the greyl with my sawyer filter, I have thought about it quite a bit as the greyl is pretty heavy. The tent and sleeping bag are heavy, but I can’t swing quality options yet, and don’t want to buy gear that I’ll be wanting to upgrade again in another year or so, I’ve already made...

Don’t plan on scouting the same location the whole time, the wilderness area we will be hunting is huge, but the side we’re going in doesn’t have but 1 access point that I’m aware of, so we will be hiking to the highest point we can find and glassing, but not trying to get close to any elk. If...

Oh, and maybe a super lightweight fishing kit to fish some of the streams and lakes before season opens, as the 5 days before season will be scouting, but mainly just glassing and acclimating to the elevation.
