If this is the case, and I do believe it’s a very valid point, then that is what legislatures should focus on and express as they argue for or against these laws. Forget the nuances of the bikes and how they are technically motorized or non-motorized. They should communicate that much better.
Come on Buzz. What the hell does that picture have to do with a mountain bike on a single track trail? That’s disingenuous and you know it. We aren’t talking roads for 4 wheel drive vehicles. We are talking single track trails, the exact same trails you find a horse or llama using.
Fair enough. May I make a suggestion. If you have not already, rent/borrow/buy yourself a pedal assisted e-bike and ride it on a mountain trail and see what you think. Who knows, you might have a slightly different opinion about them after.
No. I’m just attempting to get my brain thinking about the “why’s” behind what we do. I don’t have anything against horses, but I’d be lying if I didnt acknowledge they can have a negative impact on the forest landscape. There are a few places I frequent where horses and mules have created a...
As the laws currently stand, I believe you are correct, but I think the law could use a little tweaking. I don’t agree that a pedal assisted e-bike should be in the same category as an internal combustion dirt bike.
You very well may be correct that more people would use e-bikes than say horses which would increase disturbance.
You are also correct about established use vs new use. New use is almost always more difficult, but I would argue that just because one is established doesn’t always mean it is...
I know what my rub is and it’s that banning a “motorized vehicle” simply because it has a motor without any regard for the other significant details of that motorized vehicle makes zero sense. Especially when you compare that to the non-motorized methods of travel such as horses and the damage...
You are right that at face value it is easy, simple, and nothing to argue about. But when you look at it deeper there is a lot to argue about. Horses are waaaaaay more disruptive to the mountains than a two wheeled pedal assisted e-bike and it’s not even close.
I appreciate the response. To play devils advocate with your opinion. Why do horses get the pass vs a pedal assisted e-bike. Why not give the e-bike the pass vs the horse? Both would accomplish your goal of limiting access. Do you use horses to access the back country? I get to use my two...
So motors are bad, but a 900lb animal that craps all over the place and ruts up a trail more than most anything is good? Not sure I’m following the logic there and I think the comparison above to horses is pretty valid. A pedal assisted e-bike will leave little more trace than a human on foot...
Along the immediate benches of the Wasatch Front in Utah, closing areas to only shed hunters and not to the runners, hikers, and dog walkers doesn’t make much sense at all. The hikers and runners are all over those foothills and low level Mtn peaks and trails. If the goal is to not pressure the...
These guys must have dirt on somebody within the government. The story of the illegal big horn sheep is unbelievable and astounding that they got off Scott free.
I’m not disagreeing with you about Lee and fully support your right to vote for McMullin. I’m just stating that I don’t think McMullin stands a snow balls chance in hell of beating Lee so you better be ready for that reality and have other plans of dissuading the sale of public lands by our...
McMullin doesn’t stand a chance. The best thing to do would be make your voice heard to Lee’s office because he’s getting another term. I understand the frustration with Lee and public lands, but I still want someone to show me some sort of proof that McMullin will be different. Right now, I...
