Here is my logic - I live in the east, I get one trip per year. I probably won't be able to go on a bear hunt for quite a while, and I would obviously prefer an elk. But, if I'm going to drive 1,500 miles across the country, I'd rather come home with something rather than nothing. If the...
Just checked the regs - GoHunt’s dates are wrong - which sucks, but at least I don’t feel like a complete idiot for reading them wrong! Thanks for the help!
GoHunt has an Any Legal Weapon bear hunt listed for Unit 53 from September 1-24, alongside the archery elk hunts.
Could be that their dates are wrong - I’ll check the actual regs later today.
Thanks for all the replies!
I've applied for a few units in New Mexico for archery elk that have an OTC any-legal-weapon bear season at the same time. If I'm lucky enough to draw (not holding my breath), would I legally be allowed to pick up an OTC bear tag, and carry a rifle with me as well? Obviously would only use it...
I disagree with some of these other posts. Yes - point creep will cause the points to rise, but what other option do you have? This is the system we're working with right now, and if you have the money, your best bet is to play the game. If you apply this year, there are a finite number of...
Also - might want to confirm this, but I'm pretty sure Montana allows points to be built for kids starting at 1 year old. You could check that out as well.
Due to my schedule this Fall, it looks like my only chance to get out west will be to head to Utah for a general archery hunt in the early part of the season (Mid-August). Any advice for what type of terrain/cover to look into, or any other tips? Not looking for units or locations - I'll do...
With airfare that low, have you considered flying into Denver, and then driving to Wyoming? It might be more of a drive than you're looking for, but it may be an option.
I’m hoping to head out west this Spring for bear, and might do one rifle hunt/year after that. I’ve got my grandfathers Remington 742 in 30-06 that’s in good condition. I’ve also been eyeing a Savage Axis, or Thompson Center Compass - partly because the rebates have made them so affordable...
As a small anecdote - I was wearing some BRIGHT orange this year during opening day of Ohio's gun season. A doe came to about 20 yards from my stand, stopped and stared at me for a solid minute. I stayed absolutely still, and didn't make eye contact. After a bit she decided I was just a weird...
I actually hadn't even considered this somehow. Perhaps I could do the Mule Deer hunt as my priority. If I tag out in a couple days, I can always just stop at a gas station in Colorado and pick up an OTC elk tag on my way home. But, if I find I'm really loving the Mule hunt, and need to spend...
I'm planning out 2019, and I'm considering trying to double up on hunts this year. I live in Ohio, so the biggest issue I face is making the actual trip out and back. I have the points to draw a Utah general archery hunt for Mule Deer, and I'm also considering a Colorado OTC elk hunt. In a...
So - last year my partner and I kind of stumbled into a decent little patch of woods that seemed to hold plenty of elk. It was our first hunt, and I got a shot at a good 6pt (wounded him, tracked him for miles, never found him. I posted the story a few months ago). The area looked like it was...
