    Thanks for the welcome everyone! I did go out with the muzzleloader today in Hoosier National Forest. Several deer sightings (no bucks) One perfect opportunity for a doe for the freezer, but I passed as she had 2 fawns. Glad I watched long enough to see the fawns.

    I have heard of this happening; I guess it's part of the reason why the tags are for antlered and antlerless deer rather than buck or doe.

    Thanks for the reminder on the safety harness with tree stands. I am not planning on using a stand if I decide to go out. All the leaves are down. And I expect the woods to be relatively empty in December.

    Not that I am aware of. However, my Dad was shot by another deer hunter way back in 1971. He was fortunate and lived to hunt again; and he credits the hunter who shot him with saving his life. Let's just say gun safety was huge in our household when I was a kid.

    Redman, I hear you. I see a lot of deer (even during regular firearms season). I would characterize the places I have scouted as being "low pressure." I just am perplexed by the whole tree stand strategy. I grew up with walk and stalk. Plan on taking the muzzle loader to the range this week.

    Yes, I agree it is beautiful in the forest here and Indiana actually has 4 distinct seasons. Quite the novelty! I have lived here for a number of years, but haven't been deer hunting (yet). Looking to change that.

    My mom's Winchester Model 88; well used and in need of a stock refinishing (there is a story that my Dad set it on the hood of the car and drove off, resulting in most of the cosmetic issues when it hit the road). Great shooting gun.

    Winchester Model 70 Lightweight in 30.06. I have had it since the early 1990s. It has been a safe queen because I preferred carrying a beat up Winchester model 88 (which is not pretty, but went on every rifle deer and elk hunt in my family for decades).
