Montana: Any of you guys every hunt there? We've camped in the area of Brown's Lake and Cooper Lake a few times. I've been looking at maps and I've been interested the past couple of years in trying to hike over Windy Pass or Echo Pass into the Scapegoat to hunt elk in mid-September. Anybody every tried this, or anywhere in this area?

It would be a pack-in situation; no day-trips in this area as far as I can tell.

I’ve hunted it, but further in. You’ll likely have company.

I haven’t hunted that exact spot, but I have hunted the Scapegoat for elk in September.

Unless you have horses, it’s pretty tough, logistically. Lots of competition from others who have horses means that you’ll be 10-12 miles from the truck when you get one on the ground. Then you have to get one out in September weather.

All in all for a hunting/backpacking experience, the Bob complex is a tough one. Yet, people post questions about doing it often.
