I have a question about the calibers.45-70 and.308, I’m planning on buying a bolt action rifle for hunting anything from Pronghorn to Elk and everything in between. Two things I’m unsure of right now is, which manufacture I’ll buy my rifle from. ( I have been doing my research though) and which caliber to get. I’ll be hunting in my home state of Michigan and going out West. Thanks in advance for your help and God Bless.

There's a reason the military still uses .308 for sniper rifles. As for manufacturer, I love my Howa 1500. It's hard to beat the value for the price point. I also have a Ruger American in .308 and I can cloverleaf holes at 100 yards with Federal Fusions.

As 88man said, it's hard to beat a Tikka. I have one in .308 Win and it shoots great, typically MOA or just under. I have another .308 by Christensen Arms (Ridgeline model) that shoots half-MOA. I prefer the ergonomics of the Tikka, but the weight and accuracy of the Ridgeline is fantastic. Both are good suppressor hosts. I'd recommend you check out the Bergara Premier Highlander, too. I don't have experience with one, but they are on my short list for a "next rifle."

For your .45-70, I'd go with a Ruger 1S all day long. I would not choose between a .45-70 and a .308, though - I'd have both. Guns are your friends and you can't have too many. But if I could only have one between these 2 options, it would be the .308.

Ummm, they are a Government run entity, with some of the most backwards procurement processes imaginable!
I'm half surprised we aren't still fighting with the Brown Bess!

To the OP,
7mm-08 is the way to go. Enough power to get the job done, with manageable recoil.
Tikka are really hard to beat for out of the box accuracy, quality, and light weight.

Frist do you have something to hunt with in your home state. Like here in OH shotgun and 45-70 types. And I hand a shotgun and muzzleloader so I got something to hunt WV. Now I am getting a 350 leg to hunt at home with. Than I am done

What does MOA mean

1 MOA is approximately 1 inch at 100 yards. At 100 yards the resulting circle has a diameter of 7200 inches. Circumference is pi x diameter or 3.14159 x 7200 which equals a circumference of 22619.45 inches. There are 60 minutes/degree x 360 degrees or 21600 minutes of angle in a circle. Dividing 22619.45 by 21600 gives 1.0472 inches in a MOA.

Its a little bit apples/oranges, but I'd definitely go with the .308, unless you want to go to my favorite deer caliber, the .270 Win.

For the Army, the M110 is still chambered in 7.62x51. However, most of the M24's were rechambered to .300WM and redesignated the XM2010. The EBR14 is still in 7.62x51 but is considered a DM rifle. The military on all branches are slowly phasing out the 7.62x51.

308 is still a great round.

From your posts it sounds like you’re new to shooting. For what you’re wanting to start hunting, go with a 7mm-08, 308, or 30-06.
You’d be very hard presses to find a 45-70 in a bolt action configuration. They are almost all lever action. The rounded bullet design, like the 30-30, are made for tube magazines.
Good luck. As referenced above, there are already a ton of threads like this. Search is your friend.

My favorite rifle is a Marlin 1895 in 45/70 of course. It’s a hunting machine, it begs to be carried in your hands.

If something absolutely positively has to die I take a T3 Tikka in 300mag and go get it done. As dead reliable as a blacksmiths hammer, with the same beautiful lines. Beauty is as beauty does sometimes, and the darn thing has grown on me.
