All, I got lucky and finally drew a Unit 76 (CO) muzzleloader elk tag. I've been in the unit a bunch and know it pretty well. Would anyone know someone that could help with horses? I'll be backpacking but would like a ride in and hopefully get an elk out. I'll be solo so I won't need a big pack string. Thank you for any suggestions or info!

could llamas work for you. I found them pretty easy to manage. Rented for month long archery season in that unit. Made it possible to hunt many miles farther from trailhead than without them. Carried all of camo in so made trip in a breeze if 7 miles up and up can be a breeze.

Two guys with one bull came out heavy in our own packs with just two llamas though. Shortly after this photo I ended up with the horns on MY pack for last few miles.

Need a trailer or stock rails on your truck. I used latter. llamas hop right up no problem.

As for horse packers to be legally packed for a fe has to be rthe outfitter with permit for the specific area of the unit as it is broken into pieces, each with outfitting/packing rights assigned to a certain outfit.

GOOD LUCK getting USFS to tell you who has what area. They sell the rights/permits and burn the paperwork immediately it seemed. Found that highly aggravating. I have a whole hunt story posted up on here if interested. You would think kit a simple question “which outfitter controls packing rights assigned to to what parts of the unit…nope at least not a few years ago.

Ash Tully and Mike Ray are permitted in 76. Both are exceptional.
