Waterfowl, let’s see them!

Got out for my first hunt of the season here in Utah. Had a few fails that go along with first sit of the year, but aside from my shooting, it was a really good evening. The wind was up and there were almost always ducks in the air within view. I ended up with a pair of redheads, two drake widgeon, and a GWT. I've got to work on my shooting. It was not great at all.

I've been seeing elk sign in the Rio Grande Bosque near my duck hunting spot for a couple of years now, but no actual sightings till this morning. Before I even saw a duck, 3 elk waded across the river; cow, calf, and a decent bull. Video using phone so not great quality, but if you zoom in you can see the bull. The cow seemed interested in the duck decoys (maybe the spinner?) and waded to within about 50 yards before I think she spotted me. I think they've been trying to wipe out these elk for several years given the proximity to farm land and suburbia, without much luck.

Managed a four pack this morning in single digit temps here in NW CO including probably the single best mallard drake of the season. A big mature, beautiful bird in full late season plumage. And scotch doubled on a pair of mergansers to end the morning, which felt good and bad all at the same time.72F6EBD8-D958-442A-A047-783AE6C4811B.jpeg
